Mozart: La finta giardiniera/Die Gärtnerin aus Liebe (KV 196)

    Opera buffa in three acts.

Italian libretto: attributed to Raniero de' Calzabigi after Giuseppe Petrosellini (?), with revisions by Marco Coltellini.

German libretto: Mozart approved the translation by Johann Franz Joseph Stierle d. Ä.?, after the original by Giuseppe Petrosellini (?).

First performed in Italian at Munich, Salvatortheater, 13 January 1775, 14 days before Mozart's 19th birthday. A series of staging difficulties resulted in only three performances despite the fact that the opera was enthusiastically received.

In 1779, the impresario Johann Böhm asked Mozart for permission to perform La finta giardiniera as a Singspiel. It is likely that it was during this winter tour in Germany that Act I of the Italian setting was lost. It was found again in Czechoslovakia in the 1970s. For 200 years, only the German setting could be performed.
